PRESS NOTICE

ICI to Highlight Role of Schools in Preventing Marginalisation of Migrants

The Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) will launch a toolkit for teachers aimed at helping them to communicate with migrant parents and to encourage their involvement in school life.  The launch will take place in the Wood Quay Venue, Dublin City Council Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8 tomorrow, Tuesday, 13th September, at 10.30am

At the launch, the ICI will highlight how schools can play an important role in preventing the marginalisation of migrants.

The toolkit – ‘Pathways to Parental Leadership’ – contains practical tips for teachers on promoting the involvement of migrant parents within schools and on encouraging parents to become strongly involved in their children’s education in the home environment.  It was developed as part of an ICI project co-funded by the European Programme for Integration and Migration (EPIM) and the Network of European Foundations (NEF).

Pupils and teachers from five Dublin schools that piloted a draft version of the toolkit will be in attendance at tomorrow’s launch and will share their experiences.

Nihad Bunar, Professor of Child and Youth Studies at Stockholm University and of Behavioural Sciences at the National Policy Academy in Sweden, will deliver a keynote address at the event, outlining how the Swedish education system has adapted to meet the needs of the country’s migrant population.
