FOMACS is back in 22/23 Duke Street in the Creation Arcade having revamped the pop-up gallery space, once again. This time round we’re curating a photographic exhibition by Dana Popa in collaboration with the London-based organisation, Autograph APB, and the Immigrant Council of Ireland in the context of the anti-trafficking national campaign ‘Turn off the Red Light’.

Not Natasha traces the tragically fractured and damaged lives of young girls and women caught up in human trafficking for prostitution within Europe. Dana Popa is a native of Romania, and her focus is on women who originate from the neighbouring Republic of Moldova, the poorest nation in Europe and from which thousands choose to migrate each year - Artist’s Statement, courtesy of Autograph ABP, London

22/23 Duke Street will serve as a hub for ‘Turn off the Red Light’. In conjunction with the exhibition, Not Natasha, an extensive programme of public workshops and interviews, collective discussions and campaign briefings will take place, including among others: a workshop on ‘Animation and Social Justice Storytelling’; a public interview with photographer, Dana Popa, a Manifesto for the ‘Turn off the Red Light’ Campaign.

Not Natasha will run from 7 July – 5 August.

Sabotage of Irish Ship to Gaza – MV Saoirse

Irish Anti War Movement – Press Statement – 30th June 2011

The Irish Anti War Movement released a statement today condemning the sabotage of the Irish Ship to Gaza - MV Saoirse. The ship was due to Sail to Gaza as part of the Freedom Flotilla II this week. The damage is extensive and the ship is now unsafe to sail. The propeller shaft of the ship has been severely damaged and had this not been discovered before the ship set sail it would have seriously endangered the lives of the 25 crew and passengers on board.

Jim Roche, steering committee member and passenger on board has this morning confirmed that the damage was definitely sabotage. He will be returning to Dublin today together with the majority of the other passengers. Six of the passengers will still travel as part of the flotilla on another ship. All passengers are safe despite this malicious act of violence against the Irish vessel (which is Sovereign Irish Territory).

Further details as well as photographs of the damage will be released later today after a press conference held in Buswell’s hotel.

The IAWM are supporting a protest called by the ISPC to take place at 6pm, this evening Thursday 30th June at the Spire on O’Connell Street, Dublin. We will march to the Israeli embassy.

FW: Shatter Speech: Speech by Alan Shatter TD, Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence at the launch of Ireland’s first Visa Waiver Programme.

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Speech by Alan Shatter TD, Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence
at the launch of Irelands first Visa Waiver Programme
on Thursday, 30th June 2011, at Department of Justice,
51 St Stephens Green, Dublin 2

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to be here today to launch the first
ever Irish Visa Waiver Programme as an integral part of the Governments
Jobs Initiative. This Programme, which I initiated in my Department
shortly after my appointment, will make it easier for tourist and business
visitors to the UK to come to Ireland without the need for an Irish visa.
It is designed to give a much needed boost to our tourist industry and to
encourage business development. It demonstrates the innovative and
imaginative approach of this Government and the public sector to working
our way to economic recovery. I think it is also right that, in launching
the programme, I acknowledge the cooperation of the British government in
its development.

I am, of course, delighted that An Taoiseach and An Tanaiste have joined
Minister Leo Varadkar and myself to mark the launch of the Programme.
Their presence here this morning signifies in a potent way the importance
this government attaches to finding innovative ways to help our tourist
industry and to develop our economy. I also want to specially welcome all
of you in the audience here whether you are a provider of tourism
services or whether you work to support our tourism industry.

This week, I signed into law the Statutory Instrument which will give
effect to the Programme at its start date tomorrow, 1st July. As of
tomorrow, nationals of 16 specified countries can travel to Ireland from
the UK without the need for an Irish visa. The Programme will run as a
pilot up to the end of October 2012 but may be added to or amended at any
point depending on our experience of the pilot.

This Programme is a major breakthrough and I know that tourist industry
interests also see it as such. It is also of considerable importance that
it will facilitate those visiting Britain, who are interested in business
development, to include this State in their itinerary. For the tourist
industry this measure represents real practical assistance at a time when
it is clearly needed.

I am also pleased to announce today that nationals of the 16 countries
involved in the Programme, who are long term legal residents in the UK,
will have the cost of a visa to Ireland waived as part of this scheme.
There are very substantial numbers of people in this category in the UK
some estimates suggest that it is a million plus. This further
announcement will, I believe, open up further opportunities for our tourism
industry. These potential visitors who may never have considered coming
here for a break will now be able to come here with relative ease with no
add-on visa fee.

This concession is, I believe, a further significant development of
practical assistance and I know you will use it as a further opportunity to
generate additional badly needed tourism activity. Like the Waiver
Programme, this measure also comes into force tomorrow.

Today's launch marks, in many ways, a significant shift in the way policy
and public services are developed in this country. Put at its simplest,
it is joined-up Government in action. The main players came together in an
open dialogue where there was a shared acceptance that things needed to
change to help one of our major employers up off its knees. The Visa
Waiver Programme, as well as the waiving of the visa charge for long-term
UK residents, is a real and tangible outcome of this process of engagement,
facilitated and led by my Department.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Garda National
Immigration Bureau for their help and cooperation in developing this
Programme. Officers of the Bureau, in their capacity as Immigration
Officers, will be, of course, on the front line in ensuring that the
Programme runs smoothly as they are responsible for clearing visitors to
enter the State at airports and other points of entry. The Bureau has also
been a valuable liaison with air and other carriers.

I am also grateful for the cooperation shown by the UK authorities. My
Department works very closely with the UK Border Agency on all aspects of
immigration and border control. This initiative is, I hope, just the first
step to even greater cooperation within the context of the Common Travel
Area. In this respect, my officials have had preliminary discussions with
their UK counterparts to explore the feasibility of introducing reciprocal
arrangements. I have also personally been supported in this initiative by
my colleague, the Home Secretary, Theresa May, with whom I first discussed
it on the margins of the first European Council meeting of Justice and Home
Affairs Ministers that I attended in Luxembourg.

In conclusion, the task for you all now is to do your utmost in getting the
message out to the target countries; I urge you to keep at it and wish you
every success.

Thank you

FW: News release: Historic Victory for Domestic Workers at the ILO

SIPTU

Migrant Rights Centre Ireland

PRESS RELEASE

28 June 2011

Historic Victory for Domestic Workers at the ILO

ILO Committee Adopts Convention on Decent work for Domestic Workers

The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) and SIPTU welcome the adoption by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at its most recent meeting held in Geneva, of a Convention on Decent Work for Domestic Workers.  Domestic worker organisations and trade unions globally are celebrating the victory of the long-awaited Convention, which is supplemented by a recommendation.  The Convention, adopted by the ILO Committee in Geneva today, sets international standards to protect the rights of domestic workers worldwide.

This historic moment is a milestone in the 63-year long struggle to secure the rights of this highly vulnerable group of workers.  Domestic work is an under-regulated, underpaid and undervalued sector.  Many workers live in isolation and suffer daily abuse and harassment from their employers.  The sector has some of the highest incidences of forced labour and modern day slavery, in addition to being known for some of the most shocking situations of child labour.

Mariaam Bhatti of the Domestic Workers Action Group says: “Finally, we have official recognition by the international community of domestic workers as workers, just like any others.  It gives us the dignity and respect we have long deserved and will go a long way towards ending the abuse and exploitation that is so prevalent in this sector”.   A significant achievement of the ILO process has been its ability to connect millions of domestic workers worldwide, mobilising them into taking action to making their plight visible to the world, and highlighting their important place in the world of work.

Aoife Smith, Coordinator of the MRCI’s Domestic Workers Action Group says: “While the adoption of the Convention is positive news for domestic workers, it will not improve their conditions overnight.  The international standards have been set but we will need to continue to lobby the government to ensure that national legislation reflects the provisions stipulated in the Convention”.

SIPTU Divisional Organiser, John King, is calling on the Government to ratify the Convention as a priority and to extend to these workers full working rights and conditions of employment no less favourable than other workers in this country;  ‘Domestic Workers are employed in isolated and vulnerable positions and ratifying this treaty to give legal effect to their status of worker, which builds on the Labour Relations Commission Code of Practice in Ireland, is the right thing to do and will be supported by all right minded people and organisations.’

Paul Murphy MEP responds to Israeli attempt to crush press freedom and Cllr. Richard Humphreys' disgraceful comments

Press Statement: Paul Murphy MEP (Socialist Party) 27 June 2011

  • Israel's threatened 10 year ban on Flotilla journalists is crude attempt to crush press freedom
  • Cllr. Richard Humphreys' disgraceful accusations about Turkish activists killed by IDF last year amount to an invitation to a repeat action

“In advance of the departure of the Freedom Flotilla II to Gaza, herculean efforts are being made by the Israeli establishment to prevent this humanitarian and political mission taking place. The Israel Law Centre has failed a complaint about the seaworthiness of the US ship. This is a transparent attempt to prevent such passengers as holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein and internationally renowned author Alice Walker from participating in the flotilla.

“Their latest desperate effort is an attempt to intimidate journalists from going on the boats. They have said that any journalists who goes will be faced with a ten year ban on traveling to Israel. This is an outrageous attempt to prevent journalists being present to witness possible Israeli aggression against peaceful flotilla participants. This blatant attempt to crush press freedom should be condemned by all who defend the right to free speech, regardless of their views on the Flotilla or the Israeli blockade.

“Cllr. Richard Humphreys' pathetic smear of myself and fellow United Left Alliance member, Cllr. Hugh Lewis, does not bother me in the slightest. However, his attack on the nine activists who were killed by the Israel Defence Forces last year is outrageous. In contradiction to the facts, but in line with Israeli propaganda, he has stated that responsibility for the killing of these people lies with them and that they 'attempted to kill and injure members of the Israeli Defence Forces.' This is a fabrication not backed up with any evidence. In fact, a UN report in September 2000 confirmed that at least six of them were 'summarily executed' by the IDF. Out of respect to the family of those activists and concern for the message it sends to the IDF about how it should respond to this flotilla, I call on him to retract that statement immediately.

“Despite the combined efforts of the Israeli state and their friends in high and low places, they will not be able to stop this Freedom Flotilla. We will set sail within days for Gaza. The impact of our trip will be felt in Gaza and throughout the world as the horrific conditions that are imposed by the Israeli state on the people of Gaza are highlighted.

Support the Irish Ship to Gaza - Protest at Riverdance and the Israeli Embassy 28th June 2011

Press Statement 24st June 2011

The Irish Anti War Movement released a statement today in support of the Irish Ship to Gaza which sails as part of the Freedom Flotilla II next week to the Port of Gaza in an attempt to break the naval blockade imposed by Israel. The IAWM also supports protests at Riverdance and the Israeli Embassy on Tues 28th June 2011. The IAWM says;

  • Allow the Freedom Flotilla II unhindered access to the Port of Gaza
  • Calls a demonstration in conjunction with the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign on June 28th in solidarity with the Irish Ship and the Freedom Flotilla
  • Speakers include; Mick Wallace TD, Jimmy Kelly, Unite, Richard Boyd Barrett TD and others
  • Calls on Eamon Gilmore, Minister of Foreign Affairs to seek safe passage of the Freedom Flotilla and the MV Saoirse with its 25 Irish Passengers.

The Irish Ship to Gaza is part of an eleven vessel Flotilla comprised of ships from US, Canada, France, Italy and elsewhere. Hundreds of concerned citizens from all over the world, supported by hundreds of thousands of small donations from ordinary people will take part in the Freedom Flotilla in late June.
In the statement the IAWM noted that they would be holding a demonstration on Tuesday June 28th @ 6pm at the Central Bank on Dame St in solidarity with the Flotilla.

The demonstration will include the following speakers; Mick Wallace TD, Jimmy Kelly, Unite, Richard Boyd Barrett TD, among others. They will march to the Israeli embassy via The Gaiety Theatre to join the IPSC Riverdance ‘Don’t Dance for Apartheid’ protest. A number of protesters will also be present at the Annual Human Rights Lecture of the Irish Human Rights commission at the Royal College of Physicians during which Eamon Gilmore will be speaking.

IAWM committee member Jim Roche who is a Flotilla passenger in an open letter to Eamon Gilmore requested that he call publicly on the Israeli government to allow free passage for the Irish Ship and that they withdraw their threats of violence against the participants. Eamon Gilmore recently stated that ‘We will do everything possible to facilitate those wishing to transfer humanitarian goods to Gaza and we will work with them to avoid a repetition of the unacceptable violence that occurred last year’.
In the statement the IAWM supported the aim of the Irish Ship and Freedom Flotilla to end the continuing Israeli blockade of Gaza through civil resistance and non - violent direct action.

The Freedom Flotilla is a broad based and international movement of concerned citizens seeking to peacefully achieve what their governments have failed to do.  Lola Hynes, IAWM steering committee member stressed that this was a peaceful humanitarian mission.

The statement also noted that the UN human rights council released a report in 2010 which confirmed that the Israeli blockade of Gaza is illegal and that Israeli policies in the region constitute a form of collective punishment that is a violation of human rights. The blockade imposed by Israel has caused 1.5 million people to be effectively imprisoned in one of the most densely populated areas on the earth. 80% of the population rely on international aid in order to survive and unemployment is at 40%. There are no building materials to rebuild schools and hospitals as these are on the prohibited list, nearly all the drinking water is contaminated, cancer patients cannot gain access to potentially lifesaving treatment due to the restrictions on travel. Movement of people and goods is entirely dependent on the permission of Israel. Earlier this month the Health Authority in Gaza proclaimed a state of emergency due to an acute shortage of vital medicines.

The IAWM stated that they support the 46 Palestinian Civil Society Organisations in Gaza (including the Palestinian Association for Fishing and Marine, The Medical relief society and General Union for Health services) that called for backing for the Freedom Flotilla, insisting that the siege must end. They wrote ‘We call on the nations of the world participating in the Flotilla to continue their plans to sail to Gaza where they will be welcomed by the Palestinians’. The IAWM supports the Flotilla movement’s assertion that reaching the Palestinians through their own port defies the dehumanisation of an entire population and supports the continuing efforts of the people of Gaza to assert their right to humanity, dignity and self determination.

Richard Boyd Barrett, Chairman of the IAWM stated that; "Israel's siege of Gaza and relentless persecution of its suffering population is utterly barbaric. It is a criminal act by any definition of international law, and yet the International community allows it to continue, year after year, without any sanction against Israel. Again this year, hundreds of ordinary people of conscience from across the world have felt compelled to act where government’s have failed to do so - putting themselves at great risk to bring solidarity and aid to the beleaguered people of Gaza. Our new government must call on Israel to allow free and safe passage to Gaza for the Freedom Flotilla. It should tell Israel that the Irish participants in the flotilla and the other participants from countries across the world are doing nothing more than seeking to uphold International law and human rights, and that they must be allowed to reach Gaza, safe and unhindered. For our government to do anything less would be a gross abdication of their responsibility to protect their own citizens and uphold the international law and human rights standards they claim they are committed to. We are appealing to the Irish public to show their support for both the people of Gaza and the Irish people who are participating in the Flotilla by joining the protest at the Israeli embassy this Tuesday evening. ”
